Best Practices for Changing Motor Oil

Changing motor oil is a fundamental aspect of vehicle maintenance that ensures your engine runs smoothly and efficiently. Here are some best practices for changing motor oil that can help you perform this task effectively.

1. Understand Your Vehicle’s Requirements

Before you start, consult your vehicle's owner manual to determine the type of oil required, the recommended oil change intervals, and the correct oil capacity. Different engines have different needs, and using the wrong oil can lead to severe damage.

2. Gather Necessary Tools and Materials

To change your motor oil, you will need:

  • New motor oil (check for the right viscosity)
  • Oil filter
  • Wrench set
  • Oil catch pan
  • Funnel
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Safety gear (gloves and goggles)

3. Prepare Your Workspace

Ensure your car is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool. This will prevent burns and spills during the process.

4. Drain the Old Oil

  • Lift your vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Locate the oil drain plug under your car. Place the oil catch pan beneath it.
  • Remove the drain plug with a wrench and allow the old oil to drain completely into the pan.

5. Replace the Oil Filter

Using an oil filter wrench, remove the old filter. Before installing the new filter, apply a small amount of new oil to its rubber gasket. This helps create a better seal.

6. Add New Oil

Replace the drain plug securely after all old oil has drained. Using a funnel, pour new motor oil into the engine through the oil fill cap. Check your owner’s manual for the correct amount.

7. Check Oil Level

After adding new oil, start your engine and let it run for a minute. Turn it off and wait a moment before checking the dipstick to ensure that you have added enough oil.

8. Dispose of Old Oil Properly

It’s crucial to dispose of used motor oil responsibly. Many auto shops will accept used oil for recycling.

By following these best practices for changing motor oil, you can maintain your vehicle's health and prolong its lifespan.
