Maruti Suzuki Jimny Hits the Indian Market

2024-03-05 by drive360

The much anticipated Jimny SUV has been introduced by Maruti Suzuki in India, with costs for the base Zeta trim starting at Rs. 12.74 lakh and rising to Rs. 15.05 lakh for the top-spec Alpha trim (both prices ex-showroom, India). Since the Jimny's premiere at Auto Expo 2023, reservations have started taking place, and the business has already received over 30,000 reservations. According to our dealer sources, delivery will begin in stages starting in mid-June.

Jimny has a 1.5-litre, 105-horsepower petrol engine.

The Jimny was created especially for our market and will be built in Maruti's Gurugram facility before being shipped to other countries. India is the first market to receive the five-door version.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny platform and drivetrain

A single 1.5-liter, four-cylinder, normally aspirated engine with 105 horsepower and 134 Nm of torque powers the Jimny. It can be paired with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The Jimny uses the older-spec K15B engine, in contrast to the rest of Maruti's Indian lineup, which has switched to the K15C engine. The manual version of the Maruti claims a mileage of 16.94 kpl, while the automatic version achieves 16.39 kpl.

The Jimny comes equipped with Suzuki's AllGrip Pro 4WD system, which features a manual transfer case, low-range gearbox, and "2WD-high," "4WD-high," and "4WD-low" modes. It boasts a 3-link rigid axle suspension, a durable ladder-frame chassis, and an electronic traction control system.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny features and trims

The Jimny's Alpha model comes with all the bells and whistles, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automated LED headlights, a 9.0-inch SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, automatic climate control, cruise control, and other features. Six airbags, ESP, and hill-hold assist are all included in the basic safety package.

There are a total of seven colour variations for the Jimny, including two dual-tone variants. The Jimny is a four-seater variant even though it has a true five-door body.

Dimensions and design of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny The wheelbase of the Jimny 5-door, which has a length of 3,985mm and a width of 2,590mm, is 340mm longer than that of the 3-door version. It measures 1,645 mm in width and 1,720 mm in height. However, a large-ish quarter window on the back doors results in a very modest amount of "usable" rear glass space.

Despite this, the India-specific model retains all of the iconic Jimny design cues, including the upright pillars, clean exterior, round headlamps, slatted grille, massive off-road tyres, flared wheel arches and spare tyre located on the tailboard. The Jimny 5-door has 15-inch alloy wheels with 195/80 section tyres as standard equipment.

Rivals to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny While not a direct rival, the Mahindra Thar (Rs 10.54 lakh - Rs 16.77 lakh) and Force Gurkha (Rs 15.10 lakh) will compete with the Jimny for its pricing and positioning in India's expanding market for lifestyle off-roaders.
